Dale Frank (b. 1959, Singleton, New South Wales) is an Australian artist whose expansive practice encompasses painting, drawing, sculpture, installation, performance and film. Working since the 1970s, Frank developed an international career early in his practice, living and working across Europe, the United States and Australia. His work has been exhibited widely in Australia and internationally, including at PS1 in New York, the Biennale of Sydney and the Venice Biennale.
Frank’s early practice encompassed drawing, performance and installation, alongside a developing interest in abstraction and the possibilities of unconventional materials. In the 1980s he lived and worked extensively in Europe and the United States, where his work was presented in a number of significant exhibitions. His practice has remained deliberately experimental, moving between disciplines and resisting a fixed distinction between painting, sculpture and installation.
Painting has become central to Frank’s practice, particularly his highly material, large-scale abstract works. His paintings are often constructed through the pouring, pooling, scraping and layering of paint and resin, allowing colour and surface to develop through an intuitive and physical process. In more recent works, he has worked extensively with acrylic resin and Perspex, manipulating pigments and reflective surfaces to create luminous, fluid compositions that shift between painting and sculptural object.
Frank’s works are characterised by intense colour, high-gloss surfaces and biomorphic forms, with their titles often introducing an unexpected linguistic or conceptual dimension. His approach to materials and process places emphasis on movement, chance and the physical act of making, while the reflective surfaces of his works implicate the viewer within the painting itself.
Frank has been the subject of major exhibitions including Dale Frank: Ecstasy – 20 Years of Painting at the Museum of Contemporary Art Australia, Sydney, in 2000, and Dale Frank: Growers and Showers at the National Art School Gallery, Sydney, in 2024. His work is held in major Australian collections, including the National Gallery of Australia, the National Gallery of Victoria, the Art Gallery of New South Wales and QAGOMA, as well as international collections including the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, New York, and the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston.
